Why a cohort

Built for the child who wants to compete.

This is for the family that wants every game reviewed, every move explained, every step of the plan written down. Four students per cohort. Twelve weeks. Two sessions a week. The most personal version of ReelChess coaching.

It isn't for every young player, and that's by design. Four spots means every child knows their coach by name, and every coach knows every game. That's the cohort.

How it runs

Two sessions a week. One in person, one online.

The Saturday session is the heart of the cohort. The Wednesday session is the reinforcement that keeps the work moving between weekends.

Every Saturday
In-person at Schofields
2:00 - 3:30 PM AEST · 90 minutes
The cohort meets together over the board. Drills, position play, real practice games. If your child is sick or away, they can join the same session live via Zoom and miss nothing.
Every Wednesday
Online masterclass
4:45 - 6:00 PM AEST · 75 minutes
A focused lesson by Coach Rayman, live via Zoom. One teaching unit per week, with active homework set for the days that follow. If your child misses a Wednesday masterclass, that is completely fine: every session is recorded and posted for them to watch back.

Total contact time: 33 hours of structured coaching across 12 weeks. The cohort pauses over the spring school holidays, with no sessions on 26 September or 3 October, and resumes Saturday 10 October.

What's included

Six things you receive, no upsells.

Every cohort member gets all six. No tiered packages, no add-ons. The price you see is the price.

01
Four personal game reviews
Every three weeks your child submits one of their own real games. Coach Rayman records a 5-10 minute video walkthrough with annotations. Four personalised reviews across the cohort. Yours to keep forever.
02
Your own opening repertoire
Coach teaches the framework. Your child builds their own opening lines, with Coach's help, into a study they can save on Lichess or in the ReelChess Opening Lab. Theirs to grow for years.
03
Tournament played together
One real tournament during the cohort. Pre-tournament prep session. Post-tournament review of your child's key games one-on-one with Coach. Entry fee included.
04
Academy Premium for life
Full access to the ReelChess Academy for the duration of the cohort, and for life after. Think Lab, Endgame Lab, Coach's Picks, Online Rankings, everything we build next. Normally $190 per year.
05
Letter of Excellence
Students who attend 90%+ of sessions, complete 80%+ of homework, and demonstrate mastery of one focus unit receive a personally signed Letter of Excellence from Coach Rayman. Not every student earns it. The ones who do, earn it for real.
06
ReelChess branded chess board
A weighted, tournament-standard board with the ReelChess mark. Yours to keep. Handed out at week 1, in person, to every member of the cohort.
What your child walks away with

Three things they keep. Forever.

No promises about rating points. Those depend on the student. These three deliverables are ours to give.

Their own opening repertoire
Three openings as white, three responses as black, in their own hand. Written down, understood, theirs to build on for the next ten years.
🎬
Four annotated games on video
Five to ten minutes of personalised commentary from Coach Rayman on four of your child's real games. Most kids never get one. Yours gets four.
🏆
A real tournament under their belt
Full pre-tournament preparation, the experience of competitive play, and a post-tournament review. They learn how to prepare, how to lose, and how to come back the next round.

Frequently asked

Honest answers.

Who is this cohort for?

Children aged 7 to 11, currently rated 1000 to 1500 on Chess.com, Lichess, or in a rated tournament. We need to see real chess experience and parental commitment to the schedule.

Kids a little outside that age or rating range can still apply. Strong fits get considered regardless of being a year above the ceiling or fifty points below the floor. The interview tells us more than the rating does.

Where is the in-person session?

Saturday 2:00-3:30 PM at our Schofields venue (Western Sydney). Address confirmed at enrolment.

If your family lives too far to attend in person every week, you can join the Saturday session live via Zoom. We recommend in person whenever possible. The in-person time is where the cohort becomes a cohort.

What if my child is sick or away?

Every Saturday session is live-streamed via Zoom for the cohort. If your child can't make it in person, they can join from home and miss nothing.

If your child misses a Wednesday masterclass, that is completely fine. Every session is recorded and posted within 24 hours for them to watch back.

When does the cohort actually run?

The cohort runs September 12 to December 12, 2026. The cohort pauses over the spring school holidays, with no sessions on 26 September or 3 October, and resumes Saturday 10 October. That's twelve actual weeks of sessions.

Saturdays are locked at 2:00-3:30 PM. Wednesdays at 4:45-6:00 PM. Both for the whole 12 weeks.

Why only four students?

Because anything more dilutes the personal feedback. Four is the largest group size at which Coach can know every student's game and run individualised homework. Eight would be a lecture. Four is a cohort.

Is the price negotiable? Are there discounts?

No. $1,750 is the founding cohort price. It is already significantly below the equivalent in private coaching hours (33 hours of structured time, plus everything else, at private rates of $80-150/hour would be $2,640 to $4,950 for contact time alone, before the bonuses).

The two-payment option exists for families who want to spread the cost. It's the same total, no premium for splitting.

What happens if my child doesn't improve?

We don't promise rating points. We promise deliverables: the personal game reviews, the opening repertoire, the tournament experience, the Academy access for life. These are ours to deliver, and we deliver them.

That said, every 7-11 year old at the 1000-1500 level who does the homework and attends the sessions will visibly improve over 12 weeks. We've seen it across 200+ students. If your child does the work, the work works.

Refund policy?

If you withdraw before the end of week 1, you receive a full refund minus a $300 administration fee.

After week 1, the cohort fee is non-refundable but credit toward a future cohort is available at Coach Rayman's discretion if there are exceptional circumstances.

Can the cohort be cancelled if not enough sign up?

Yes. If fewer than three students are accepted by August 24, 2026, the cohort is rescheduled and all paid deposits are fully refunded. We will not run a degraded cohort.

What if I'm not accepted?

Four spots fill in order of fit. If we don't have a place for your child in this cohort, you'll receive a short reply letting you know. We can't always provide detailed feedback on individual decisions.

Four students. Twelve weeks.

Application required before any payment. Four spots, reviewed in order received. The founding cohort opens September 12, 2026.
