ReelChess Rating

Pure Chess.
Precisely Measured.

The RCR uses the Elo formula that has powered international chess ratings for over 60 years. Every rated game at a ReelChess event updates your rating based on the probability of winning, the result, and your development stage.

Wins against stronger opponents earn more points. Losses against weaker ones cost more. The system is self-correcting and fair.

  • Updated after every ReelChess rated tournament
  • Same Elo mathematics as FIDE and NSWJCL
  • Five K-factor tiers for accurate discovery
  • 12 named bands from Foundations to Elite
  • Published on the ReelChess leaderboard

ReelRating

More Than Chess.
The Full Picture.

A student can have a low chess rating and be an exceptional thinker — disciplined, curious, and analytically gifted. The ReelRating captures what Elo never could.

Four pillars. Scored weekly. Percentile-ranked within cohorts. Level-adjusted. No other chess system in the world measures this.

  • Tracked every coaching session
  • Percentile-based — fair across all schools
  • Level-adjusted for every rating band
  • Linked to the 7 Pillars of problem solving
  • Full term report issued to every family

ReelChess Rating

The Chess Rating
System. Explained.

The RCR operates on a 200–2800 scale using the internationally proven Elo formula. Every student has a rating that moves up and down based on game results at ReelChess events.

Step 1 — Expected Score E_A = 1 / (1 + 10^((R_B − R_A) / 400)) E_A = probability Player A wins    R_A, R_B = current ratings Example: A is 800, B is 1000 → E_A = 24% chance of winning
Step 2 — Rating Update R_new = R_old + K × (S − E) S = 1 win / 0.5 draw / 0 loss    K = development coefficient A (800) beats B (1000) with K=40 → +30 points → new rating 830 The same upset at K=20 (established) would only earn +15 points

K-Factor — How Fast Ratings Move

50200–600 or first 10 games

Fast discovery. Big swings are healthy.

40600–1000

Still developing rapidly. High improvement rate.

301000–1400

Slower progress. Moderate sensitivity.

201400–1800

Established player. Standard FIDE K.

101800–2800

Expert. Precise movements only.

Official Recognition

Multiple Official Ratings.
One Tournament.

ReelChess tournaments feed multiple official rating systems simultaneously. A student who competes in a qualifying event earns ratings across four bodies.

ReelChess Rating

Our proprietary system. Applies exclusively to ReelChess events. The foundation of a student’s competitive identity.

✓ All ReelChess events
NSW Junior Chess League

The official state junior rating body. Qualifying ReelChess tournaments are submitted for state junior ranking.

✓ Qualifying events
Australian Chess Federation

The national rating body. ACF-rated events contribute to the national chess rating used for Australian championship.

✓ Qualifying events
Fédération Internationale

The international federation. FIDE ratings are the global standard. ReelChess is working toward FIDE-rated events.

Coming 2026

No other junior chess program in NSW feeds all four rating bodies from a single event. Students build a verifiable competitive record at state, national, and international level simultaneously.

The 7 Pillars

Real-World Thinking
Built Into Every Session.

The B2 problem solving component is grounded in the 7 Pillars of the ReelChess curriculum. Chess is the vehicle. These are the destinations.

1
Business and Economics

Strategic Resource Management

Chess teaches material value, sacrifice, and long-term planning — the same skills used in budgeting, negotiating, and business strategy.

2
Science and Technology

Analytical Reasoning

Evaluating moves and predicting outcomes builds the analytical toolkit used in data science, engineering, and scientific inquiry.

3
Health and Well-being

Mental Resilience and Focus

Sustained concentration under pressure, composure when losing, and learning from setbacks builds genuine mental fortitude.

4
Mathematics and Logic

Precision and Pattern Recognition

Calculating variations, recognising tactical patterns, and logical deduction enhance mathematical reasoning that directly improves academic performance.

5
Creative Arts and Design

Innovative Problem Solving

Finding creative solutions when standard approaches fail. Visualising positions that do not yet exist cultivates the same imagination used in design and creative fields.

6
Civic Engagement and Ethics

Ethical Decision Making

Respecting rules, understanding consequences, and thinking about the broader impact of decisions — skills for responsible citizenship and leadership.

7
Communication and Interpersonal Skills

Collaboration and Conflict Resolution

Post-game analysis discussions, team events, and collaborative exercises build communication, teamwork, and the conflict resolution skills that underpin every successful professional and personal relationship.
